PostSubject: Conficker: Apocalypse soon, or April Fools' joke?   Tue Mar 31, 2009 8:45 pm

There's no question that Conficker, a.k.a Downadup, is a nasty piece of work. As a computer worm, it's insidiously crafted to take control of an infected Windows PC, attempt to disable antivirus protection and potentially communicate with more than 50,000 automatically created Internet domains.

There are three variants of Conficker. Each is more advanced than the next, and the latest one, Conficker.C, is the one that worries researchers most. Estimates of the numbers of computers infected varies greatly, from a few million to nearly 10 million, and they potentially can work cooperativerly in what's known as a botnet.

But exactly what Conficker will do remains something of a mystery. Security gurus know that, on Wednesday, April 1, it will reach out to its masters for instructions. What might the botnet do when it receives them? Most botnets -- and there are some that are bigger than Conficker -- are used to blast spam e-mail and even more malware across the Internet. They can also be used to flood a particular Web site with data, making it inaccessible to those who want to use it, in what's called a Denial of Service attack.

Conficker's PCs could be told to do any of that and more . . . or, nothing at all may happen on Wednesday.

Gizmodo has an excellent - if somewhat alarmist - roundup of what's known about Conficker. When you're done reading that, and if you're not curled up under your desk in a fetal position, read Ben Worthen's more leavened take at the Wall Street Journal.

Conficker takes advantage of a flaw in Windows that was patched back in October. If you have Windows set up to automatically download and install patches and fixes -- and if you are running effective, up-to-date antimalware software -- then you should be protected. If, however, you're one of those obstinate folks who mistakenly think Microsoft's updates do more harm than good, you may be about to find out otherwise.

Also at risk: Businesses that take their sweet time testing patches before applying them across networks and who may not yet have installed the October patch.

Microsoft has an excellent page that provides details about how Conficker infects computers. The company also has details on how to remove it manually. A separate page provides you with symptoms, with more detail here.

Here are the basics to watch for:
* Account lockout policies are being tripped.
* Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), Windows Defender, and Error Reporting Services are disabled.
* Domain controllers respond slowly to client requests.
* The network is congested.
* Various security-related Web sites cannot be accessed.

Finally, the SANS Internet Storm Center has a detailed, frequently updated list of links from third parties with removal instructions and tools, information about eradication efforts and general information about the worm.

Again, if you're patched and practice safe computing, you should be fine. If you're not and you don't . . . well, it's time to get your house in order. You don't want to be the brunt of Conficker's April Fools' joke, whatever it might be.

I am usin Avira Antivir Free Edition for last 2 years.. Even I made my most of my friends to use it.. One reason is that it can detect all viruses.. If it couldn't detect a new virus/worm then no other antivirus can.. And in performance wise it is good too..

Nod32 is a good antivirus too.. It can detect most of the viruses avira cud.. Problem I find with Nod32 is that it is not very user friendly..

See the AV benchmarks..

I used kaspersky before Avira.. The reason why I swirtched to Avira is that Kaspersky failed to detectt many deadly viruses and worms which infected my pc.. Even if we choose that exe file and scan it will show no virus found..

If you have some suspected files which you think is a worm or infected with virus then scan that file with any of these websites.
http://www.virustotal.com/
http://virscan.org/
These websites will scan that file with all latest patched antiviruses and return the result.

Many times I found that kaspersky showin no virus and avira showing virus detected.. That why I switched to Avira.

Nowadays there are no viruses.. Viruses and are some dangerous executable code which can infect all executable files in ur pc and make them one of them.. Similar to some hollywood movies..
It is difficult to clean... And we will have to format hdd.. My pc got infected with virus many times but it happened more than 6 years ago..

Nowadays what we see as mostly worms. They are stand-alone programs which are programmed to spread, multiply and do harm to pc. They can defend themselves by blocking antivirus updates, blocking net, blocking user from accessing registry and other windows features, etc..
It is easy to remove woms.. We don't even need to format pc. Warrock wont get infected by any worms..

Kareena I'm having some serious virus in my computer. I have ESET NOD 32 - it's detecting the virus and quarantining it. But the virus is I think multipying itself and again ESEt is blocking it. Therefore it's just blocking it the number of times it is attacking. I want to delete the dum virus- what to do? I am downloading Avira Free Version. You think it will work?

If not, please give a solution.

That worm is running at startup.. You will need to remove it manually..

Better option is Avira Rescue CD.. It will scan without loading windows..

Really?
Wow I didn't know that. But problem with Linux-- Bad for Gaming; more than 3/4th of the games will not work on it as the Gaming Database will not support it since they go for latest versions like XP, Vista, etc.
